SINGLE REVIEW: Drones (OSAKA PUNCH)

SINGLE Drones // ARTIST Osaka Punch

The prodigal sons of prog return as Brissie boys Osaka Punch unleash their flashy new tune Drones, signalling some dark new sonic waters for this illustrious quartet.

Fresh from touring the nation alongside Aussie heroes Cog earlier in the year, Brisbane prog phenomenons Osaka Punch have been hard at work honing new material and their comedy chops as they close out 2019 with a sinuous new track and music video in the form of Drones.

For the unconverted, ain't no party like an Osaka Punch party cos an OP party is one of fun, frivolity and face-melting fusion, bringing forth an unholy union of prog metal and poppin' hooks that can only be outdone by the quartet's larger-than-life live shows (and supplementing music videos, which are always a riot of a good time). And while recent tunes How We Operate and Hall of Shame have certainly showcased the significant growth and expansion these gents have undertaken in recent years, Drones comes armed with a dazzling array of confident precision and just enough of the beloved Osaka Punch sass to pump up the grit and wipe a smile on your face while hijacking you to downtown head-bang central.

Detailing the significant hot mess faced by existing in present-day society, Drones serves up a stomping anthem, sharply meshing some chunky riffs from axe-man Chrispy Town, snarling basslines from Brenton 'Reggie' Page, spring-loaded rhythmics from Dane Pulvirenti and some serious vocal light and shade from frontman Jack Muzak as he curls some gnarly snarls amid his melodic soars in this prowling little ditty.

Perfectly accompanied by yet another memorable vid featuring the lads engaged in some high-stakes poker shenanigans (and a very welcome Queen homage), Drones may seem like just another home run from one of the most engaging acts in the Aussie scene right now - and a home run it is, but it's also one of the most sonically matured tracks yet from this bunch of talented hooligans and a striking peek into what bodes to be a kickass 2020 in the Osaka Punch world. If you like your riffs juicy steak thick with a side of spicy melodics, stick it to the man and crank this one to 11 if you dare.

OSAKA PUNCH'S NEW TUNE DRONES IS OUT AND ABOUT RIGHT NOW, AND IF YOU'RE IN BRISBANE ON THE 1ST OF NOVEMBER, YOU CAN CATCH THE BOYS CHRISTENING THEIR NEW SONIC BABY WITH A HOMETOWN LAUNCH SHOW AT THE ZOO. MORE INFO HERE.
