SINGLE Boy Bye // ARTIST Lauran Hibberd
Come say "hi" to Boy Bye, aka the new crunchy anthem from UK slacker pop kween Lauran Hiibberd that will hurl you lock, stock and barrel into a 90s grunge utopia with warm and effortless charm.
Already gaining traction for her tongue-in-cheek tunes and vivid narratives, UK wunderkind Lauran Hibberd has steadily sharpened her glossy grit and indie anthems into something that'll tickle your nostalgia and charm any fans of the slacker pop and broader indie genres. And while a pandemic isn't generally the ideal time to concoct and create new tunes, Hibberd embraced the limitations, teaming up with iconic producer Suzy Shinn (Weezer, Panic! At The Disco, Fall Out Boy) to concoct a brand new single Boy Bye in a transatlantic collaboration.
Glistening in lo-fi beauty, Boy Bye wallows in saturated riffs, charmingly apathetic vocals and laid-back hooks that take cues from 90s slacker rock and just a hint of pop as Hibberd straddles nostalgia and modern takes on this crisp and self-contained anthem.
"Boy Bye’ S co-dependency, it has a scarily obsessive nature about it and is based on the need to ‘feed’ someone to keep them around. I sort of battle with myself throughout the whole track, the same way you would in your brain when stuff like this happens and you try and justify it to yourself. There’s an odd strength in it though, and I think it’s noticing it and being able to say it out loud that gives it that balls to the wall sort of ‘get lost’ momentum. Also BYE BOYSSSS!!!!” - Lauran Hibberd
Previously charming her fans since a breakout year in 2018, Lauran Hibberd has radically proven herself to be an enamouring conduit between social commentary, personal awareness and fluently suave indie tunes, with her previously releases turning heads and snagging her a slot at Glastonbury Festival in 2019. But no matter what comes next for this intriguing artist, Boy Bye is the ode we all need to shake up some toxicity (and potentially bust out the flannos à la 1990s-style).
