EP REVIEW: Turbo Thunder Pussy (VIBRANT HEELS)

EP: Turbo Thunder Pussy // ARTIST: Vibrant Heels

Today The Soundcheck is heading over to Canada to check out the upcoming EP Turbo Thunder Pussy from sonic chameleons Vibrant Heels - and dang it's a time!

Forming from the ashes of a previous band, alt-rock quartet Vibrant Heels are a pack of self-confessed outliers with a passion for catchy, heavy grooves and shedding some of the constricting genre barriers that can barricade creativity for many a modern-day band. And following their debut 2017 release with Driven, this Canadian bunch have clicked their vibrant sonic heels together and arrived at yet another stage of evolution with their upcoming EP Turbo Thunder Pussy officially unveiling next week on September 6th.

In the first of many genres to hit the Vibrant Heels edges, Turbo Thunder Pussy starts out in a distorted Chili Peppers web, full of funked up basslines, fluid riffs and a touch of sneering grit littered across the swaggering In The Fray. Up next, the broodier Cycles injects soaring vocals and booming grooves as the Vibrant Heels lads venture into some sturdier alt-rock territory.

CYCLES (VIBRANT HEELS)

Not content to stick with one genre, the kooky Lollipops brings out some Primus vibes with woozy sing-speak vocals adorning some low-key grooves and buoyant bass before kicking up the rock with blazing chameleon Ruby/Engine. Part funk rocker, part madcap jaunt, Ruby/Engine closes out with growling vocals and effectively sets up the EP's heaviest track yet: Orbital Bombardment. Bursting at the seams with gravelled tones and menacing industrial vibes, the rumbling conclusion for Turbo Thunder Pussy adds yet another facet to the Vibrant Heels portrait. Circling some nostalgic early Deftones and Tool tendencies, Orbital Bombardment offers a total change of pace from earlier proceedings and the coarse vocals scratch at a deep, dark facet to the Vibrant Heels arsenal - and one we would definitely care to hear more of.

With Turbo Thunder Pussy, there's a heck of a lot to take in across a short space of time, Wwth each song seemingly attempting to distance itself from the last. And while at times the lack of cohesion jars the journey along the way, overall the few falters are significantly shielded by the Vibrant Heels lads and their compelling commitment to permutation and pizzazz, and it's ultimately refreshing to behold a dynamic and defiant dedication to capturing sonic diversity.

THE BRAND NEW EP TURBO THUNDER PUSSY FROM VIBRANT HEELS WILL OFFICIALLY UNVEIL NEXT THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 6TH, ALSO MARKING THE GROUP'S FIRST RELEASE ON THEIR OWN LABEL LAZERRAY RECORDS.
