EP: The Birth of an Alter Ego // ARTIST: Beau Lightning
Come witness the onset of an enigmatic artist as Adelaide rocker Beau Lightning unveils his dynamic new EP The Birth of an Alter Ego.
Going it alone as a solo artist after the breakup of his previous band Lucid Dreams, Beau Lightning (aka Eli Georgeson) has swiftly found his niche in a new project and new alter ego, with the inception of Beau Lightning ultimately unlocking sonic endeavours not previously tapped into by this absorbing artist. Part rock and roll ingenue, part flamboyant craftsman, there's a dynamism lurking behind Beau Lightning and his EP The Birth of an Alter Ego that cements Lightning's musical journey - and it's an engrossing adventure from start to finish across the space of five tracks.
Jumping out with some Muse-ish theatricality and bombastic tones, Smoke In Your Lungs dangles dark punches beneath wavering guitars and cascading drums. Aptly setting the stage for the remaining EP, you can practically taste the smoke rising from Lightning's arrangement as he injects some psychedelic twangs into a diverse rumination on not knowing what you've got til it's gone. Next up, Last Night blends some influences from Queens Of The Stone Age as broader textures take the wheel, hurling some desert rock elements onto the table as Lightning flits between beseeching belts and slinky chest vocals
LAST NIGHT (BEAU LIGHTNING)
Continuing on with some hazy delights is the Wolfmother-esque Don't Get Bit; a rollicking burn full of dreamy layered backdrops and some palpitating shifts punctuated by wailing guitars. And Rock 'n' Roll life drops by next to audition to be the next soundtrack for an HBO series about a sinful preacher in the wild, wild west, busting out some scintillating vocals clouded in dust and sludgy textures that will hypnotise and terrorise with some off-beat alluring wizardry.
For a change of pace, closing track In My Hands delivers a softer side to the Beau Lightning M.O, at times stripping back to acoustic arrangements while still drizzling Lightning's brooding vocals across the ever-building instrumentation. It's another dark and dusky outing, but one that lingers long after the lush tones have whisked off into the night.
With The Birth of an Alter Ego, Beau Lightning has captured jolts of bustling textures and lavish soundscapes in a hulking sonic package. And while it's both disarming and delightful to witness an artist so deftly evolve into themselves, it's ultimately with this EP that we simultaneously witness the birth and establishment of an artist finally ascending into the style he was always meant to call home.
