Psych gets a spooky makeover with the brand new album 'FAME, EROTIC, DREAM' from Perth "novelty spyrock" trio Hideous Sun Demon.
Conjuring the same frenetic tones of fellow psych rockers King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard and The Belligerents, Hideous Sun Demon have emphatically embraced the genre while also attempting to carve out their own slice of the garage rock pie - and 'FAME, EROTIC, DREAM' is a woozy, wild and whimsical trip laden with chomping guitars, roaming segues and enough reverb to drown Cream and Grateful Dead in a thunderous milkshake.
Galloping out with one of the lead singles 'Antithesis', there's a clear modus operandi ahead, with hypnotically retro vibes growling across 12 tracks that are at times begging to be heard live.
ANTITHESIS (HIDEOUS SUN DEMON)
From rollicking bangers ('More Colour', 'Earn It', 'Social Media Deities') to grungy anthems ('SSPPUUNNKK'), there's a gradual evolution across 'FAME, EROTIC, DREAM' between surf rock vulgarity and straight up psych rock debachery. Sure, we're treated to all the Eastern tinges and frenzied feedback you'd expect, but with some defined Aussie spunk and finessed production that pleads a strong case for these lads to be taken seriously.
Of their relentless opus, the band hint at their ever-expanding trajectory since their beginnings in 2013, stating: "Fame, Erotic, Dream is our attempt at creating a sonically richer record whilst maintaining our DIY garage energy. We've gotten a lot closer to what we want to sound like on this record.”
Whether you're a lover of some glam Halloween tones or you're just after an album to jolt you awake in lieu of that expensive morning coffee, 'FAME, EROTIC, DREAM' is a flamboyant endeavour that shakes, rattles and rolls its way into your brain, and probably your neighbour's too.
