Roll up, roll up! Brissie 8-piece soul commanders The Holy Rollercoasters are bringing their scintillating new EP Bathe to life in person tomorrow night, launching their new sonic baby at Club Limbo.
Oozing more swaggering charm than Frank Sinatra chugging martinis in a smoky bar, The Holy Rollercoasters are quite simply one of the most engrossing local acts kicking around Brisbane. Mixing soul, funk and languished grooves with their latest release (their brand new EP 'Bathe'), this engrossing collective have upped their sonic ante, curling sprawling horns around tempered beats and Motown wafts into a truly invigorating musical outing.
Recorded in their own home studio, the group's '3 Takes' strategy ensured a raw, dynamic and realistic capture of the group's unique sound, as The Holy Rollercoaster's musical director and engineer Andrew Garton explains:
"We didn't sit around and navel-gaze over takes, we just got it in the can! We run a '3 takes strategy - the rhythm section get 3 goes at it and we choose the best of those. Then the horns get 3 goes to overdub over the top of that. Then Jimi gets 3 takes to get the vocal down. That's it. It gives us a good combination of the flexibility of digital recording and the emboldening limitations of the analog workflow. Vintage vibes come primarily from the performance itself, but also from mic placement and mixing the whole thing through tape, giving the tracks crunchy saturation and nice round bass" - Andrew Garton
With a salacious amount of light and shade peppered throughout 'Bathe', plus the inclusion of fellow groovers Golden Sound, Signature Series and Yas Queen jumping on the lineup for Saturday night, it's a guarantee you're in for a bit of an epic time when The Holy Rollercoasters take the stage at Club Limbo (Hotel West End) - so be sure to go cleanse your soul with some sinfully saucy sonic delights if you're in Brisbane tomorrow evening.
