LIKE PRAWNS LEFT OUT IN THE SUN, MELBOURNE INDIE ROCKERS THE MEAN TIMES GO OFF (IN A GOOD WAY) WITH THEIR SOPHOMORE EP 'RAW PRAWN' OFFICIALLY DROPPING TOMORROW.
As much a love letter to 90s rock and uncooked seafood as it is stylistic anarchy, The Mean Times hit raw and rocking heights with their brand new EP, significantly shedding their earlier synth-fuelled power pop tendencies seen on their debut 'You've Got the Wrong Guys' and going full steam ahead into more assured waters.
Embracing a whole horde of influences from raw rock, punk and soul, 'Raw Prawn' catapults your ears into a 5-track journey that brushes with polished lofi, soaring riffs and the occasional sassy brass that shies away from more superficial thematics and steers into musings on approaching mid-life and learning how to adult (which reminds me, I need to pay my rent).
Partially recorded at home and primarily engineered and mixed at Rolling Stock Studios in Melbourne by Nao Anzai (Cash Savage and the Last Drinks, NO ZU, Kim Salmon) and mastered by Mikey Young, 'Raw Prawn' retains a level of boisterous garage rock, while exploring enhanced sonic territory, as the band explains:
“Working with Nao was unreal. He’s a punk production genius. If he likes something he will nod with stifled sensei-like approval and it makes you feel like you’ve finally achieved something in your life. Otherwise he will sit back quietly until you really stuff up, then he tells you exactly where you went wrong and you feel bad that you let him down.” Tom Morgan
“I hate prawns,” Eoin Clement
'Raw Prawn' arrives at a poignant time in The Mean Times evolution - after seven drummers, three bassists and three lead guitarists shifting through the mix, the trio have emerged a little older, a hell of a lot bolder and ready to unleash their energetic souls onto the music world. And whether you're a grunge god, Brit-pop babe or just a fan of classic Aussie rock, The Mean Times mean business, and they've got all your bases covered - ultimately, they're the everyman who will thrash you with riffs and take you out for a non-craft beer afterwards.
'RAW PRAWN' IS OFFICIALLY OUT IN THE WORLD TOMORROW, BUT YOU CAN GRAB AN EXCLUSIVE SNEAK PEEK AT THE MEAN TIMES IN ALL THEIR GLORY BELOW!
