SINGLE REVIEW: Tundra (SLEEPMAKESWAVES)

SONG: Tundra ARTIST: sleepmakeswaves There have been some bonkers Aussie releases this week, including the long-awaited fourth album from Blue Mountain boys Thundamentals and a new tune from Gang of Youths hot off their Laneway shows. But on a slightly different side of the road during the week, Sydney instrumental rockers sleepmakeswaves snuck out a pearler titled ‘Tundra’ (and no, it has nothing to do with the Mighty Boosh episode as I was secretly hoping). Clocking in at just under 6 minutes, the track is a dense and textured voyage that ebbs and flows with ambient precision and hypnotic intensity. If you aren’t already acquainted with this dynamic quartet, perhaps you may have heard of a certain little event called the ARIA awards? Yep, these guys are ARIA nominated and have a swag of international shows under their post-rock belts. And living up to their trailblazing reputation, the follow up to 2014’s ‘Love of Cartography’ will be released late March courtesy of some savvy crowd-funding to the tune of $45,000. All up, ‘Tundra’ offers some pretty solid riffs to bulk this track; and with producer Nick DiDia of Rage Against the Machine and Karnivool fame behind the scenes, I think we’re in for some next-level shenanigans when the new album 'Made of Breath Only' finally drops.
